-- Highlights of Debra's externship with the University Hospitals Office of Government Relations. Debra’s main responsibility as an extern was to research and apply for Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) designations for five University Hospital facilities. She also researched and summarized new state health-related legislation, drafted
policy memoranda, assisted in outreach and partnership-building, and contributed to the process of securing funding from the Northern Ohio Poison Center (NOPC).

-- Highlights of Emily's externship with Voices for Ohio's Children. Focusing on the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA) and the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI), Emily conducted research and gathered demographic data to strengthen Voices’ advocacy of these two policies. The JJDPA and the JDAI call for community-based alternatives to incarceration and advocate for the safety of juveniles who are placed in adult jails.

-- Highlights of Kelly's externship with Bellefaire Jewish Children’s Bureau. Tackling the issue of underage drinking, Kelly taught high school students at a summer leadership camp, learned about state policies addressing underage alcohol consumption, and met with mayors throughout the Cleveland area to advocate stricter consequences for adults who provide alcohol to youth.

alternatives to incarceration for juveniles in Ohio. She attended
legislative meetings, learned about rehabilitation programs, examined
cost variations among the programs offered, and produced a policy brief
on the cost-comparison of institutionalization versus community-based

-- Highlights of Gennifer's externship with The Village Network. As an extern, Gennifer analyzed the history, implementation, and implications of the controversial Adam Walsh Act, which was designed to increase protection for children from sexual and other violent crimes.

-- Highlights of Caroline's externship with Voices for Ohio’s Children. Concentrating on the enrollment of children in Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), Caroline researched the underlying reasons for under-enrollment in these programs, reviewed successful enrollment campaigns elsewhere that might serve as models for Ohio, and helped to develop outreach strategies and training materials for improving enrollment in underserved communities.
